Avoiding the Dark Side: White Hat SEO vs. Black Hat SEO
Everybody knows Search Engine Optimization is important for ensuring that your website attracts and engages visitors. SEO is a lot like making art: there are some best practices, rules, and guidelines, but much of the knowledge people have acquired over the years has been the result of experimentation. It's a dynamic process of learning how search engines process information and how to take advantage of algorithms to get the best results possible.

So what does that have to do with hats?

To put it simply, "white hat" SEO is the act of developing your website's search engine optimization in an ethical way, i.e. not cheating. White-hat tactics use optimization strategies that emphasize your website's human audience, rather than those which seek to trick Google. Think of SEO as a long-term investment in the growth of your website—there isn't an ethical quick-fix. Search engines pay attention to certain get-results-quick, "black hat" tactics. Some of those unethical strategies include keyword stuff, which I go into a bit more in another post. Another frowned-upon practice includes hiding text or links to match the background of website pages in the hopes that Google will parse that secret content. These practices are a quick and easy way to get banned from a search engine, which can be a death sentence for your online presence.

What does all this mean in a practical sense?

It means if you plan to include specific keywords in the written content of your website, the words and phrases should be included in a way that flow naturally and provides information or value to your readers. Your goal shouldn't be to trick Google or find sneaky ways to get more page views. The focus should be on setting up long-term goals for website growth that include researched, ethical SEO practices, like those followed by Levant Technologies.
