Time Theft: The Enemy We Tolerate

Sometimes when we’re in the thick of a workweek, we aren’t always thinking about the best ways to work on our business. We end up working in the business, where the day-to-day can easily become a series of fires to put out or items to check off a to-do list. Much of our time is co-opted by emails or text messages or meetings and by the end of the day, a lot has been done without any corresponding sense of accomplishment. Fellow Normanite and marketing guru, Korey McMahon, touches on several of these topics in his excellent book, Bottom Line Marketing: Concepts to Advance Your Brand and Profits, in which he gives some important advice on maintaining productivity and eliminating time theft.

McMahon argues there are five specific culprits when it comes to time theft:

-       Email

-       Smartphone

-       Open Door Policies

-       Meetings

-       You (procrastination/perfectionism)


In all of these instances, productivity is hampered when we are perpetually tuned into something else, whether that's our email inbox or the little red numbers on our phones begging to be looked at. These distractions might not seem like much, but consider how much of your workday is spent responding to emails or messages instead of taking care of major projects. For most, these distractions keep us from accomplishing our goals not only in the short-term, but also the long-term by robbing us of the time to do the quality of work necessary to growing our brand.

Similarly, unstructured and unnecessary meetings often rob hours from the day when we could be at our most productive; they zap us of intellectual energy, which could be spent on something more substantive with the appropriate room to work. In the same vein, with effective use of meeting time, tasks can be appropriately delegated on a schedule everyone can commit to—meetings are only the enemy when they serve little purpose and keep us from doing our actual jobs.

McMahon is an advocate for working smartly and setting clear goals to advance a brand. By being appropriately organized and scheduled, without the excess of distraction inherent in many places of business, anyone can develop their business and spend their days increasing profitability instead of wasting valuable time on distractions and menial tasks.
